Adoption Preparation

Adoption Preparation is a time of assessment and education to ensure prospective parents’ readiness to introduce a new child to their lives. MLJ Adoptions has set standards based on state and international guidelines. Your Adoption Preparation Guide will provide detailed instructions, documents, and outlines.

  • Your first responsibility is to gather the necessary documentation and submit it to the Director of Adoption Preparation.
  • After the Director of Adoption Preparation has received and reviewed all required information, she or another assigned Home Study Coordinator will meet with prospective parents in their home for the initial interview.  This visit will include a brief inspection of the home to ensure that health and safety guidelines are met; however, the majority of the time will be spent in interviews. The Home Study Coordinator will want to meet and interview all members of the household regarding the prospective adoption and daily life.
  • The Home Study Coordinator will assist prospective parents in creating a personalized plan for education.  Adoption Preparation Education may be completed in group classes, assigned reading, online courses, and/or individual sessions with the Director of Adoption Preparation or Home Study Coordinator, depending on the needs of the prospective parents.
  • The Home Study Coordinator or Director of Adoption Preparation will conduct a final interview with prospective parents prior to completing the written Adoption Preparation Assessment.
