What is Special Needs Adoption?

Families often start out on their adoption journey wanting to make a difference in the life of a child. But when families contact an agency, they may be told that most of the programs they’re interested in are “Special Needs Adoption” programs. This can be a scary term, and when we have this conversation with prospective clients, they …

How Important is Post-Adoption Support?

MLJ Adoptions talks to many families each week that are just beginning to research adoption. Many of these families ask questions about current programs and process, length of wait for placement, and other questions that have to do with the past and the present, but I don’t think that I have had any questions about the …

What Happens When Families are Matched with a Child from Bulgaria?

The international adoption process is a long one, and adoption from Bulgaria is no exception. Families diligently wade through mounds of paperwork, get fingerprinted numerous times, complete their education, submit their dossier, soak up everything they can about adopting from Bulgaria, and wait, wait, and wait some more. After what seems like an eternity, families …

Adopting from Ukraine – the Referral Process

What is the referral process like for families adopting from Ukraine? Ukraine issues a “blind referral,” which means that a family doesn’t receive a referral prior to travel. Instead, families are invited for an appointment with the Central Adoption Authority, the State Department for Adoptions and Protection of the Rights of the Child (SDAPRC), commonly referred to …

Is it just useless information and needless reading that is sent to adoptive families? The resources provided by adoption agencies at the beginning of a family’s adoption process are easy to ignore; there is so much to …

Saying Goodbye in the Ukraine Hosting Program

At the conclusion of our Winter Ukraine Hosting Program this year, we gathered at the airport with our host children, their escort and their families. I experienced a familiar knot in my stomach. Should I Change My Adoptive Child’s Name?

A question I get asked by many of the families I work with adopting from Bulgaria is, “Should I change my child’s name?”  The answer is a truly personal choice.  When I share the names of my children, I am frequently asked why I changed my children’s name when we adopted them, as it is …

Dispelling Some Myths About Adopting from Bulgaria

Upon initial research into adopting from Bulgaria, some families have felt discouraged. Families may find online that the program is described as a “special needs only” program or that the wait to adopt a child without significant special needs will be excessive. My Advice to Adoptive Families

International Program Director, Lydia Tarr, has personally adopted four children from Ukraine and professionally she has assisted in placing over 200 children.
