MLJ's Annual Adoption Picnic & Extended Education Weekend

Everyone is invited to this family fun event! This picnic is not reserved just for clients, but open to extended family, prospective adoptive parents, adoption and orphan care advocates, as well as your friends and neighbors.

Picnic Activities

For the kids, we will have a bounce house, multiple crafts, balloon animals, corn hole & more!

For the adults, we encourage you to engage with MLJ staff and other families in attendance to hear stories, gain support, ask questions, and enjoy the company of family and friends!

Food & Drink

MLJ is providing Dick’s Bodacious BBQ sandwiches for the main entree, and also providing drinks.

We are asking that families bring a dish to help with our pitch-in!

FRIDAY, SEPT 13

The following sessions are free of charge and geared towards families interested in adoption or MLJ families that are in the early stages of their adoption process. MLJ Clients please enroll on your client care page, all others can enroll by clicking on the links below.

Affording Adoption 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

This seminar will be addressing the costs of adoption and the opportunities for funding that exist, including grants, loans, tax credits, HR benefits, fund-raising, and more. Led by our Financial Resource Coordinator who raised more than $50,000 for her own adoption.

Home Study 101 11:45 AM – 12:45 AM

Join us for an hour discussion of what you can expect during the home study process. Common concerns will be discussed and your questions will be answered.

International Adoption Risks 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM

MLJ’s Chief Executive Officer and Adoption Attorney with more than 13 years of adoption experience, Michele L. Jackson, will discuss and explain risks involved with international adoption. Some of the risks include financial, medical, and travel risks. Michele will also discuss time frames, and answer other questions you may have.

Initial Adoption Information 2:45 PM – 4:45 PM

MLJ’s Chief Operating Officer and Adoption Attorney, Nicole Skellenger, will discuss the complete process of international adoption and the country programs offered by MLJ. Nicole will share tips and other things to think about to help assist families in determining if international adoption is right for them and which country program may be a good fit for their family.

SATURDAY, SEPT 14

The following sessions are education opportunities for current MLJ clients. These are classes that will count towards the Hague required education. MLJ Clients please enroll on your client care page, all others can enroll by clicking on the links below.

Vulnerable Children 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Your child’s story began before he or she met you. These early pages may impact you and your child in ways that you have not anticipated. Topics covered include, but are not limited to: the in-country conditions that affect children; effects on children of malnutrition, developmental risk factors; data on institutionalized children and the impact of institutionalization on children, including the effect on children of the length of time spent in an institution and of the type of care provided in the expected country.

Eastern European Culture Class 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM

This additional course is required for all families adopting from Eastern Europe. If you are adopting from Bulgaria, this is a great opportunity for you to learn more about the people, culture, and history of Eastern Europe.
